Trading Rules
Introduction/Preface
The following trade rules may be viewed by some as strict and unorthodox, but these specific rules and guidelines will ensure that the league stays healthy and realistic. I know many of you love to make huge blockbuster deals and numerous trades throughout the year to customize your teams. However, this is not a fantasy league and we need to maintain some realism to keep the league running for multiple seasons.
A trade is the literal removal of assets from your team in place of other assets in order to make the team better. It’s not something that real NHL GMs take lightly. The success of their team and their jobs depend on how well their decisions pan out. One of the major reasons so many other leagues unfortunately don’t work out (and why we needed to restart our league) is because people get so excited about making trades that they forget their team needs, how close their team is to a cup and how these deals will impact their present and future. When this happens, some GMs decide to quit the league and at that point it is very hard to replace a GM with a team that is completely different than what it started as.
What does the league hope to accomplish with these rules?
- Prevent constant Blockbuster trades that result in random fantasy rosters on every team
- Ensure GMs make smarter and more realistic trades that address a team's needs, not just let them get their favorite players.
- That GMs are smart with their picks and prospects
- In the unfortunate event that a GM quits the league, the league has an easier time replacing the GM with a new member
Individual Trading Rules/Guidelines
- No trade can involve more than 4 Roster Players (combined from both teams)
- No trade can involve more than 7 Total Pieces (combined from both teams)
-Any trade compromising the integrity of the league or team may be declined. This will be on a case by case basis and will on be applied under extreme circumstances. See example below.
Example #1 (Acceptable Trade)
Montreal: Sharp + Hjalmarsson + 3rd
For
Chicago: Plekanec + Diaz + 2nd +2nd
This trade would be APPROVED by the league. 4 or less roster players are being moved, as well as 7 or less total pieces in the deal.
Example #2 (Too Many Roster Players)
Detroit: Weiss + Skille +Versteeg
For
Florida: Zetterberg + Holmstrom + Abdelkader
This trade would be DECLINED by the league. The trade includes 5 or more roster players.
Example #3 (Too Many Total Pieces)
Dallas: Wheeler + Fehr + Scheifele + 5th
For
Winnipeg: Jagr + Dvorak + Faksa + 1st
This trade would be DECLINED by the league. While only 4 roster players are being moved (Wheeler, Fehr, Jagr and Dvorak), the trade has a total of 8 pieces.
Example #4 (Trade Compromising the League or Team)
Pittsburgh: Grabovski + Gardiner + Kadri + 2nd
For
Toronto: Crosby + Cooke
This trade would be DECLINED by the league. Trading Crosby at this point would damage the league and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Trading Caps/Limits per Season
Each team will be allowed a total of 4 trades in an entire season.
- Two trades during the regular season
- One extra trade at the Trade Deadline
- One extra trade during the Offseason/Draft
All trades during any period of the season must follow the specific individual trading rules and guidelines listed above.
Regular Season Trades
The regular season consists of every cycle leading up to the last cycle before the trade deadline. If a GM does not use both of his regular season trades, he can carry them over and use them either during the trade deadline or next offseason/draft. However, trades will reset at the start of every season and will not carry over from the last season.
Trade Deadline Trade
This extra trade given to all GMs is only to be used at the trade deadline. The trade deadline will consist of the last cycle period leading up to the trade deadline date. Some GMs may have more than 1 trade to use depending if they used the two trades given to them during the regular season. This will create some strategy for some teams depending on their positioning in the standings.
The trade given at the trade deadline may not be carried over to the offseason. In other words, use it or lose it.
Offseason/Draft Trade
This extra trade is to be used only during the offseason (Draft Day / Free Agency) and cannot be carried over to the next season. I will give all of you the nod when it is okay to start using this trade.
